Contributing

The basic nature of LibreCAD as an open source free software is to be open to improvement. The variety of contributor profiles makes LibreCAD richer so everybody is welcomed ! Beginners have a fresh look and may report issues that experienced users are used to and do not report.

The documentation is very important to users. It helps to understand how LibreCAD interacts with the user and guide him with some good practices linked to LibreCAD.

The community needs two profiles to support this work:

Introduction

LibreCAD has been part of Google Summer of Code (GSoC) for many years. This page helps students to get involved.

The LibreCAD participation was always under the umbrella of BRL-CAD. Sean from BRL-CAD does a great job leading us CAD/CAE/CAM (or CAx in short) projects through several years of Google Summer of Code. But this was not always clear and mixed up things sometimes.

Context

English is used for developing LibreCAD code, for the GUI and for all the documentation.
GUI translators ensure that the LibreCAD interface is available in other languages. GUI means all the menus, messages and commands visible to the user.

Welcome

Most people are attracted to LibreCAD as a free Open Source CAD application but maintaining good software relies on a good organisation behind it. The LibreCAD community welcomes you and asks you to get involved in the community.

As you install and use the software you are likely to need help from time to time. The community documentation will help you but the forum or chat service is there when you need more help.

Context

LibreCAD uses its own font format for various reasons. Based on its roots in QCAD, which used its own CXF format, LibreCAD enhanced this format in LFF (LibreCAD Font Format).

Deployment

LibreCAD comes with a collection of common used fonts. Some of them are contributions from our community, others are converted from TTF fonts with our command line conversion tool ttf2lff.

LibreCAD genesis

A bit of history

The project started around 2010 as a fork of QCAD 2.0.5.0. It began as a project to build CAM capabilities into the community version of QCad for use with a Mechmate CNC router. This gave rise to CADuntu. The project was known as CADuntu only for a couple of months before the community decided that the name was inappropriate. After some discussion within the community and research on existing names, CADuntu was renamed to
